< Go Back Dyson & Vacuum Cleaner Servicing Scams Posted: Feb 19, 2015 At J Barlows we've known all about these telephone cold calling scams (as exposed by the BBC's Watchdog) for some time now and we have customers who have fallen for the scammers tactics. Its getting more frequent and involves a telesales rep calling saying "Your Vacuum Cleaner is due for a service" (Usually a Dyson which is pure guesswork).
They then offer a discounted service at around £20 but by the time their Engineer has finished (And we use the term "Engineer" very loosely) the customer usually winds up with a bill of around £100. Customers are then persuaded to take out a £90 a year service contract which is quite simply ridiculous!!! Unfortunately the victims of these scams are usually the elderly and vulnerable. Our advice is to be aware and inform your parents, grandparents or anyone you feel could be at risk and in future either deal direct with the vacuum manufacturer or alternatively trust a reputable established Vacuum Cleaner repair shop.
Even if it's not Barlows there are other shops that we know offer a professional & honest service, simply check their web details and customer reviews etc...
